Updated from 12:25 p.m. with a statement from Verizon.
Mobile network monitoring site Outage.Report showed a spike in network issues from 8 a.m. to 10:40 a.m. on Monday. Atlanta TV station TXIA-TV also reported problems with Verizon calls Monday. Meanwhile, DownDetector.com showed outages in the Northeast and Southeast, with lesser network issues in San Francisco and Seattle. Verizon's own outage map showed issues in New York and the Atlanta metro region.
In a statement to TheStreet, the company said that "Verizon Wireless experienced interruption in voice service for some customers in a few markets this morning. Engineers were able to quickly identify and resolve the issue and service was restored by approximately 10:25 am Eastern."
Shares of Verizon were down about 1.1% Monday to $45.32 while the broad S&P 500 index was up 0.4%.
Network superiority has long been a selling point for Verizon.
The influential wireless testing group RootMetricsgave the carrier top scores in its reporton network performance in the second half of 2016. "Based on our testing, Verizon is the undisputed leader in terms of coverage and network reliability," RootMetrics wrote. Likewise, Verizon had thetop ranking in each of the six of the U.S. regionswhere J.D. Power measured call, messaging and data quality, in a March report.
The telecom bowed to industry pressure in mid-February and began to offer an unlimited plan, as it lost subscribers. The major telecoms T-Mobile USA (TMUS) - Get Report , Sprint (S) - Get Report and AT&T (T) - Get Report all offer unlimited plans now.
The marketplace will get more crowded later this year, when Comcast (CMCSA) - Get Report starts to resells Verizon service. Charter (CHTR) - Get Report also has a deal to resell Verizon's mobile offering.
