Shoppers continued spending at higher-end apparel and accessories retailers Neiman Marcus (NMG) and Nordstrom (JWN) - Get Report, as both recorded increases in same-store sales for September.

Neiman Marcus said September same-store sales rose 19% on the strength of double-digit sales of women's fine apparel, which helped to drive similar growth rates in jewelry, designer handbags, women's shoes and cosmetics.

Men's shoes and sportswear also showed strong gains. Total sales for the month rose 19.3% to $302.4 million from $253.5 million in the same period a year ago.

Nordstrom said same-store sales for the month of September rose 7.9%, while total sales rose to $421.7 million from $364.4 million in September 1999.

fell 3.1%, but the month was up against a 28.7% comparable-sales increase in September 1999. Total sales rose 25.6% to $29.3 million from $23.3 million. Total retail sales for the third quarter ended Sept. 30 rose to $103.4 million from $77.6 million in the year-ago period. Same-store sales rose 4.8% for the third quarter.
