said its president, Pierre Lassonde, will retire Dec. 31.

Lassonde will continue his employment in a part-time capacity, providing strategic guidance to the company, and will serve as vice chairman of the Newmont board of directors, effective Jan. 1, 2007, the Denver-based company said.

The company also announced the appointment of Richard O'Brien as executive vice president and CFO.

"Although Pierre's day-to-day presence will be missed by all of us, we understand and respect his decision to balance his family, work and World Gold Council commitments at this stage in his life. We are pleased that he has elected to continue his employment and involvement with the Company on a part time basis," the company added.
