The staff reduction represents less than 2% of the company's total workforce. About two-thirds of the total reduction will occur at

newspaper, with fewer than two dozen of those jobs coming from the newsroom.

While the company said it expects to record a charge to earnings at some point related to the job cuts, it can't determine the amount at this time. Shares of New York Times were down 64 cents, or 2%, to $31.88.
