NEW YORK (

TheStreet

) -- U.S. stock futures were pointing lower Tuesday as the

Federal Reserve

begins a two-day meeting and as U.S. corporate earnings fail to excite investors.

European stocks were falling while Asian shares ended Tuesday's trading session mixed. Japan's Nikkei 225 index gained 0.04%.

The economic calendar in the U.S. Tuesday includes the first day of the two-day Federal Open Market Committee meeting, and the Redbook retail sales report at 8:55 a.m. EDT.

U.S. stocks

on Monday staged a late rally to finish in positive territory, starting the new week with a bounce after another round of mixed quarterly results.

President Obama and GOP challenger Mitt Romney squared off Monday in the third and final presidential

debate

, a debate focused on foreign policy.

Obama said the U.S. was the "one indispensable nation" in the world and is stronger now than when he took office, while Romney said the U.S. has a responsibility to promote peace throughout the world but that domestic issues like a sluggish economy had weakened U.S. leadership.
