Holiday shoppers can cross the Microsoft Surface Earbuds off their lists after Microsoft (MSFT) - Get Report announced on Thursday that the headphones will not launch until 2020, delaying the debut from its previous timeline of "later this year."

Microsoft chief product officer, Panos Panay announced the delay via Twitter.

Microsoft shares were flat in afternoon trading Thursday.

In October, Microsoft announced several new products that would be launching in the coming months, including a new Surface laptop, a laptop-tablet hybrid and the Surface Earbuds that have now been delayed.

Designed to be a competitor to rival Apple's (AAPL) - Get Report AirPods Pro earphones, the Surface Earbuds are wireless and priced at $249 a pair, the same price as Apple's Pro offering.

The wireless earphone market is getting crowded with fellow big-tech company Google (GOOGL) - Get Report reportedly upgrading its own brand of wireless devices. Google's wireless earbuds are also slated for release in the spring with a price point of $179. Amazon's (AMZN) - Get Report  own $130 wireless Echo Buds also recently went on sale.
