NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- McDonald's (MCD) - Get Report is recalling about 12 million Shrek Forever After 3D drinking glasses because the designs on the glasses contain cadmium.

Long-term exposure to cadmium can cause adverse health effects, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

The 16-ounce glasses, which come in four designs -- Shrek, Fiona, Puss n' Boots, and Donkey -- were being distributed by McDonald's restaurants nationwide from May 2010 into June 2010 for about $2.

McDonald's urges consumers to immediately stop using the glasses, but said in a press release, "to be clear, the glassware was evaluated by an independent third-party laboratory which is accredited by the CPSC, and determined to be in compliance with all applicable federal and state requirements at the time of manufacture and distribution."
