Shares of McDonald's (MCD - Get Report)  were rising slightly Friday after the fast food giant increased its quarterly dividend by 8% to $1.25 a share. 

The dividend is payable Dec. 16, to shareholders of record on Dec 2. The company will pay out $900 million in the fourth quarter. 

"Our broad based business strength across the globe is a testament to the Velocity Growth Plan. (Thursday's) dividend increase reflects our confidence in the plan and our continued focus on driving long-term value for all stakeholders," said CEO Steve Easterbrook. 

This is the 43rd consecutive year that McDonald's has raised its dividend since it began paying dividends in 1976. Through August, the company has returned $21 billion through dividend payouts. 

McDonald's shares have risen more than 20% year to date. The stock was up 0.3% to $211.34 Friday.
