Walt Disney's (DIS) - Get Report Marvel has made a killing of its popular superhero franchises, and with more heroes waiting the wings, it stands to make even bigger bucks.

Since buying Marvel in 2009, shares of Disney have soared 328.6%, outpacing the 103.6% return in the S&P 500. The company has not only been aided at the box office, thanks to movies like The Avengers, but it's also helped its other businesses, such as television and parks, having developed TV shows such as Agents of Shield and two shows on Netflix (NFLX) - Get Report , the popular Daredevil  and the upcoming Jessica Jones. If you go to a Disney theme park, Spiderman, Iron Man and The Hulk have become staples, just like Mickey and Minny Mouse.

In 2016, Marvel will release two new films-- Captain American: Civil War, starring familiar face Chris Evans, and Doctor Strange, starring Benedict Cumberbatch. The first two Captain America films grossed $176.7 million and $259.8 million in domestic box offices respectively, according to ticket tracker Box Office Mojo.

Overall the production company has made $3.6 billion in domestic box offices off its 12 superhero films, with Marvel's The Avengers holding down the top spot with $623 million in sales domestically, according to Box Office Mojo.

Characters, such as Tony Stark and Captain America, have become familiar faces in many households, and with the success of the aforementioned The Avengers franchise and Guardians of the Galaxy, Marvel could be positioned to introduce new characters into its line up.
