) -- Former South African President Nelson Mandela is on his way home Friday after spending three days in a hospital for an acute respiratory infection. Officials called for calm regarding his health.

Mandela, 92 years old, was flown to a hospital in Johannesburg Wednesday from a vacation in Cape Town.

Prior to Mandela's discharge from the hospital, Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe said late Thursday, "There has been mounting concern about the health of the former President Nelson Mandela. Medically there is no need to panic."

Motlanthe said Mandela was suffering from problems related to his age, and "conditions that have developed over years." Mandela was imprisoned for 27 years for his attempts to overturn apartheid.

He was released from prison in 1990 and served as South African president from 1994 to 1999.
