Macy's (M) - Get Report announced plans to hire about 80,000 seasonal workers for its Macy's and Bloomingdale's stores, the same amount of holiday workers it hired a year ago.

The company will hold a national hiring event on Oct. 24, with events to be held at all stores, call, distribution and fulfillment centers. In addition to on-site events, the retailer also will offer phone interviews for online applicants.

"During the holiday season, we rely on our seasonal colleagues to provide our customers with an excellent shopping experience - whether that's in stores, online or on the phone," said John Harper, chief stores operator.

Thirty thousand of the 80,000 jobs will be offered at the company's fulfillment centers, a 6,500 position increase year over year.

Macy's shares have been halved year to date, but the holiday season is the most important season for any retailer. Any late-year uptick is contingent on strong results from Macy's holiday quarter.

The company also noted that 10% of the seasonal workers it hired last year joined the company permanently after the holiday season.

Macy's shares were falling 0.2% to $14.62 on Thursday
