, analysts on average expected January same-store sales to increase 5.7%, compared with 8.5% for the four-week period ended Jan. 29, 2000.

The Menomonee Falls, Wis., department-store chain said total sales for the five weeks ended Feb. 3 were $371.3 million, up from $234.8 million in the four-week period last year. January has five weeks this year compared with four weeks last year. On a comparable four-week basis, total sales increased 27.5%.
