Johnson & Johnson's

(JNJ) - Get Report

McNeil Consumer Healthcare division has issued a recall of certain over-the-counter products in the Americas, United Arab Emirates and Fiji after receiving consumer complaints about moldy, musty or mildew-like odor coming from the products.

McNeil Consumer Healthcare has determined that the odor is caused by trace amounts of a chemical called 2,4,6-tribromoanisole (TBA). McNeil says the odor can result from the breakdown of a chemical, that is sometimes applied to wood, and which is used to build the wood pallets that transport and store product packaging materials.

McNeil says the health effects of this chemical have not been well studied, but no serious events have been documented in the medical literature.

Items McNeil is recalling include Children's Motrin -- specifically the Junior Strength Motrin IB Caplet 24 ct, Junior Strength Motrin Grape Chewable Grape 24 ct and Junior Strength Motrin Orange Chewable Tablet 24 ct; Children's Tylenol -- specifically the Children's Tylenol Bubble Gum Meltaway Tablet 30 ct and Children's Tylenol Grape Meltaways Tablet 30 ct; and other products under the Benadryl, Extra Strength Tylenol, Motrin IB, Regular Strength Tylenol, Rolaids, Simply Sleep, St. Joseph Aspirin, Tylenol 8 Hour, Tylenol Athritis, Tylenol PM names.

In December 2009, McNeil recalled all lots of Tylenol Arthritis Pain 100 count with ez-open cap, for the same reason.

McNeil says it has now applied broader criteria to identify and remove all product lots that it believes may have the potential to be affected, even if they have not been the subject of consumer complaints.

Johnson & Johnson stock has slipped 0.5% to $64.80 amid news of the recall.
