Murdoch's resignation comes amid a serious hacking scandal in the United Kingdom that has resulted in ongoing inquiries by Parliament launched by Prime Minister David Cameron. Investigations this past summer revealed phone tampering crimes that allegedly involved British tabloids owned by News Corp. CEO Rupert Murdoch.

Murdoch will remain executive chairman of the News International division of News Corp., the director of

The Times

editorial board, chairman of

BSkyB

and the News Corp. deputy chief operating officer, according to the

London Evening Standard
