Susquehanna Financial Group semiconductor analyst Christopher Rolland believes Intel (INTC) - Get Report could end up with all of Qualcomm's (QCOM) - Get Report iPhone (AAPL) - Get Report wireless chips business by 2018, according to Barron's.
Rolland has a "positive" rating on Intel and last month wrote that with the introduction of the company's XMM 7560, Intel could become much tougher competition.
"We understand Intel is putting more incremental back-end modem capacity in place over the next few months, supporting our view that Intel will increase share in this year's handsets with a strong possibility of 100% share in 2018. While we were optimistic that Intel may win other OEM sockets, Chinese handset vendors did not share our enthusiasm. Additionally, we learned that OEMs like Huawei are increasingly committed to using their own modem solutions," Rolland wrote today, Barron's noted.
