Holidays Bright for Urban Outfitters

The retailer says same-store sales jumped 9% for November and December.

Shares of Urban Outfitters (URBN) - Get Urban Outfitters, Inc. Report got a lift Thursday after the apparel seller reported a 28% jump in sales for November and December.

Same-store sales -- representing sales at stores open at least a year -- rose 9% for the two-month holiday period, the Philadelphia-based company said.

At the Urban Outfitters chain, same-store sales, or comps, climbed 5%. Its Anthropologie stores had a stronger performance, with a 16% rise in comps. The Free People chain, which also is a wholesale business, recorded a 17% same-store sales rise and a 46% surge in wholesale sales.

The company operates 122 Urban Outfitters stores, 105 Anthropologies and 15 Free People stores.

The big jump in sales comes against relatively weak results last year. In November and December of 2006, same-store sales dropped 5%.

Urban Outfitters spent much of 2007 working to reverse sales declines that stemmed from inventory issues and trouble indentifying fashion trends. Those efforts began to bear fruit throughout the year, particularly at the Anthropologie business.

Shares of Urban Outfitters were up 46 cents, or 1.7%, to $27.85 in recent trading.
