NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- Even with gas prices falling over the past few weeks, reaching a low for the year, it still costs a lot to fill up -- $40 to $50 for most Americans. At least half of the country’s 128 million commuters drive between 22 and 30 miles round trip for work, and that means pain at the pump if your vehicle doesn’t give you good bang for buck.

The good news is some of the most popular SUVs are getting more fuel-efficient, with miles-per-gallon ratings of 30 or higher, according to the latest U.S. Department of Energy and the Environment Protection Agency’s Fuel Economy Guide. For commuters, the trick is in choosing the right vehicle.

TheStreet compiled a list of 14 SUVs that can save you the most money in annual gas expenses. Even the least efficient of the bunch gets at least 27 miles for every gallon of gas.

A note on our methodology: We are assuming a price per gallon of gas costs $3.25, the average of what Americans are paying in October. The average American drives 16,550 miles a year, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation. Actual money saved is derived by comparing the SUVs on the list with this year’s biggest gas guzzlers -- Mercedes-Benz’s G550 and its G63 AMG, which have a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of a whopping $114,200 and $135,700, respectively. The two Mercedes SUVs each get a mere 13 miles to the gallon in combined highway and city mileage. TheStreet excluded SUVs that use diesel fuel.
