Grocery Stocks: WINN Win Situation

Winn Dixie leads as the grocery stocks outpace the broader market.

While the broader market slumped into the weekend, most grocery stocks stayed above water.

Safeway

rose Friday after an earnings report that missed Street estimates flattened the stock the day before. Shares closed up 0.7% to $18.50.

Also reversing course from the day before was

SuperValu

(SUV)

, shares of which rose 2.8% to $15.61.

Among other grocery stocks:

Winn Dixie was the biggest winner, rising 6.4% to $9.67.

Kroger fell 0.1% to $20.67.

Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Co. rose 0.5% to $4.07.

Whole Foods fell 0.5% to $12.15.

Costco rose 1.9% to $42.34.

BJ's Wholesale Club rose 6.1% to $29.88.

Wal-Mart closed up 2.1% to $49.24.
