NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- General Motors is planning to recall about 1.5 million vehicles globally because of issues with their windshield-washer fluid system that could potentially result in fires.

GM said it plans on disabling the system module to resolve the problem.

This would be GM's second such recall in two years and occurs just a day after

Chrysler

said it was recalling 600,000 vehicles in connection with brake malfunctions, "sticky" gas pedals, and even electrical fires. All this draws more and more unwanted attention to the vehicle defects being experienced across the global auto industry, in the wake of Toyota's sudden acceleration problems.

One bright spot for GM this week is news that the company will keep roughly 900 dealerships nationwide open, when the original plan was to have them shuttered, the

Associated Press

learned. This move could save thousands of jobs.

The reports says that GM's North America president Mark Reuss told

AP

that the automaker will now end up with about 5,000 U.S. dealers in July, higher than the original plan for 4,100; there were around 6,000 GM dealerships in existence when the company filed for bankruptcy a year ago.
