The Erie plant remains GE Transportation's largest, and the company said that it is still committed to the plant. The company will move production to another plant in Fort Worth, TX.
The job cuts represent about a fifth of the more than 2,500 people that the Northwest Pennsylvania plant employs.
General Electric expects to begin talks with Local 506 of the United Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers of America, the union that represents the workers, within the next 60 days.
GE's were slightly up to $25.59 each early Thursday afternoon.
