named retail veteran Dawn Robertson as president of its Old Navy brand to replace longtime company executive Jenny Ming.
Robertson, 51, most recently served as managing director of Australian department store Myer. She previously was president and chief merchandising officer of Federated Direct, a division of
Federated Department Stores
, overseeing the online and catalog business of Macy's and Bloomingdale's.
Gap said that during her four years at Myer, Robertson repositioned the brand and improved its financial performance.
Her arrival at Gap comes as the specialty apparel company is struggling with a long string of monthly sales declines, particularly at its namesake chain and Old Navy. Last month, Old Navy's same-store sales declined 3%.
The company's year-to-date same-store sales were down 7% as of Sept. 30.
Ming, who helped launch Old Navy in 1994, announced in July that she planned to leave in the fall.
Shares of Gap recently were down 35 cents, or 1.8%, to $19.50.
