The Federal Trade Commission has launched an investigation into Equifax's (EFX) - Get Equifax Inc. Report  major data breach which compromised the information of up to 143 million people, Reuters reports.

"The FTC typically does not comment on ongoing investigations. However, in light of the intense public interest and the potential impact of this matter, I can confirm that FTC staff is investigating the Equifax data breach," a spokesman said.

The FTC may also file a complaint against the consumer credit reporting agency as it typically does when it feels a company has been irresponsible at managing data.

Shares of Equifax were falling nearly 8% during Thursday morning trading.
