named Jack L. Kopnisky president and operating chief, starting Sept. 6.

Kopnisky, 49, was president of the consumer banking group at

KeyCorp

. He also served as CEO and president of KeyBank USA's Consumer Finance business, including auto, recreation, mortgage, home equity and educational lending. Kopnisky worked at KeyCorp and its predecessors for over 17 years.

"Jack's operational and management experience is well-suited to help us meet First Marblehead's growth potential," CEO Daniel Meyers said. "Jack has integrated companies, and understands transaction processing and state-of-the-art information technology. In particular, Jack is focused on consumer needs, and his experience in student lending and the development of loan products will prove extremely valuable in his new role."

On Monday, First Marblehead rose 7 cents to $30.84.
