In a move to ratchet up its crackdown on clickbait websites, Facebook (FB) - Get Report will start giving lower prominence to links that take users to web pages filled with deceptive or annoying advertisements, Reuters reports.
The social media giant said that it intends to downplay links that people post to websites containing an excessive amount of ads relative to content, or that have deceptive ads like "1 Crazy Tip to Lose Weight Overnight!"
The downgrade of the links is expected to take effect today on News Feed, Facebook's home page where such ads frequently appear.
"People scrolling through their News Feed are often disappointed when they click on such links and do not find valuable information," Andrew Bosworth, Facebook's VP of ads and business platform, told Reuters.
"People don't want to see this stuff," he said. "We're just trying to figure out how to find it and rank it further down News Feed when possible."
