NEW YORK (MainStreet) -- Toys R Us, Wal-Mart (WMT) and Target (TGT) have all announced an early start to Black Friday this year by opening their doors on Thanksgiving Day, but most consumers don't like the idea.

A recent


from retail research organization Consumer Search found that 87% of consumers believe retailers should be closed Thanksgiving Day.

Additionally, 61% said they think more highly of retailers who give store employees the day off to spend with their families.

But just because a majority of consumers believe the sales should wait doesn't mean they won't head out right after Thanksgiving dinner.

"There are plenty of people who will shop Black Friday sales early on Thursday, not only to get the deals, but there's also a sense of adventure that will attract many consumers," says Andrea Woroch, consumer savings expert with

And while it may appear as if retailers are simply trying to one-up each other, their real aim is likely to get consumers in the door earlier so they can spend more.

"Retailers won't offer extra sales," Woroch says. "Instead, sales will be spread out to create a larger window to capture sales and capitalize on the Black Friday shopping craze."
