Walt Disney's (DIS) - Get ReportRogue One: A Star Wars Story had the second best December opening of all time, behind only last year's Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Rogue One brought in $155 million in its opening weekend vs. MKM Partners' estimate of $150 million. Disney's Moana dropped to second place and raked in $11.7 million, while Office Christmas Party from Viacom's (VIAB) - Get Report Paramount Pictures unit grossed $8.5 in its second weekend, according to comScore data.

New release Collateral Beauty and Harry Potter spinoff Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them rounded out the top five with $7 million and $5 million, respectively. Both films are from Time Warner's (TWX) Warner Brothers division.

Revenue from the weekend's top 10 films totaled $201.5 million, which was in line with MKM's expectations. But the total represented a 33% drop year-over-year due to "extremely tough" comparisons from Disney's The Force Awakens a year ago. Still, Rogue One recorded the 12th highest opening ever for the domestic box office.

"A strong box office force was felt around the world as Disney's Rogue One: A Star Wars Story opened at #1 in all markets for a massive worldwide weekend debut of $290.5 million that included $135.5 million in 54 international territories and $155 million from North America," comScore Senior Media Analyst Paul Dergarabedian said.

Imax (IMAX) - Get Report was also a winner this weekend, grossing a "hefty" $29.2 million from 708 screens from Rogue One globally, said MKM Managing Director Eric Handler. That is a top five result of all time for Imax and the second best December opening ever after last year's The Force Awakens.

"Domestically, IMAX contributed $19 million from more than 400 screens, which equated to an as expected 12% market share, and a strong $47k average revenue per screen. IMAX had 8 of the 10 highest grossing screens in the region," Handler wrote in a note.

Rogue One was also the largest Imax opening ever in key markets such as Japan, Denmark and Belgium. The film generated $10.2 million internationally from Imax screens.

Box office revenue is up 3.2% quarter-to-date through December 18, according to MKM. "The ability to get close to our (-5.5%) forecast will likely come down to Rogue One grossing somewhere in the $400mn-$450mn range along with solid openings from Sing and Passengers," Handler added.
