On Tuesday the Walt Disney Co. (DIS) - Get Report said its live action film Beauty and the Beast will open in Malaysia on March 30 with no edits. The film was originally supposed to open in the country on March 16, but was delayed due to Disney's refusal to edit the film.
This new version of Disney's 1991 animated feature has been generating a lot of buzz since it was announced and since Emma Watson signed on to play the film's heroine, Belle. Recently, the movie made history when the director noted that the first gay character in Disney history would appear in the film.
The Malaysia Film Censorship Board chairman Abdul Hamid had previously approved the film with a cut involving a "gay moment" in the final version. In the country scenes "promoting homosexuality" are banned, the Associated Press reports.
After a second review it was decided that the scene in question was not offensive, AP added, having spoken to a government official.
