"Coco," took in $71.2 million across 3,987 North American theaters during the Wednesday through Sunday period.
The animated film, based on the Mexican holiday of Día de Muertos, follows a 12-year-old boy named Miguel who unexpectedly visits the land of the dead where he seeks the help of his great-great-grandfather to return him to his family.
"Coco" boasted the third-best Thanksgiving holiday opening in history, and has been receiving rave reviews from audiences everywhere.
Time Warner's (TWX) Warner Brothers and DC Comics production "Justice League" finished second for the holiday weekend, posting $60 million at 4,051 locations during the same timeframe.
"Wonder," the family drama from Lionsgate (LGF) , had a solid weekend as well finishing third with roughly $32 million at 3,140 locations. Disney-Marvel's "Thor: Ragnarok" finished fourth with $24 million at 3,281 sites.
