said July same-store sales rose at a slightly faster-than-expected clip and said August results should also be strong.
The Arkansas-based discounter said sales at stores open more than a year rose 3.2% last month, better than the 3.1% gain forecast by analysts surveyed by Thomson First Call. Overall sales jumped 10.9% to $20.61 billion.
By division, Wal-Mart Stores saw same-store sales rose 2.4% from a year ago, while Sam's Club's same-store sales rose 7.7%. The company forecast overall same-store sales will rise 2% to 4% in August.
The stock closed at $53.20 Wednesday.
