Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters expected same-store sales for March to rise 9.3%.
Costco Thursday said same-store sales in the U.S. rose 5%, while international same-store sales gained 28%.
Costco said the five-week March period included 34 days of sales compared with 35 last year and Easter fell in the reporting month of April in 2009. The calendar shift hurt March total and comparable sales by about 1% to 2%.
Excluding the effects of gasoline prices and inflation, same-store sales in March rose 3%. The increase was 2% in the U.S. and 7% internationally, the retailer said.
