, the warehouse retailer, said Thursday same-store sales in May rose 9% while total sales rose 11% to $6.09 billion.
Costco said same-store sales rose 7% in the U.S. in May; internationally sales gained 17%.
Excluding gas price inflation and stronger foreign currencies, total same-store sales in May rose 5%, Costco said.
Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters expected same-store sales to rise 9.7%; on an adjusted basis analysts expected a gain of 7.3%.
Costco said the latest May period included 28 days compared with 27 last year, while Memorial Day fell in May 2009, not this year. The holiday shift positively impacted May 2010's May total and comparable sales by about 2%.
