Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters expected Costco to post a same-store sales rise of 7.2% in January.
Costco said comparable-store sales in the U.S. gained 4% during January, while international same-store sales rose 25%.
Costco, in a press statement Thursday, said gas price inflation and stronger foreign currencies had a positive impact on January's sales. Excluding these factors, January same-store sales rose 2%.
