said its big cable unit hired America Online top engineer John D. Schanz to run its network operations.

The Philadelphia-based broadband provider said Schanz will become executive vice president, national engineering and technical operations, and report to Comcast Chief Operating Officer Steve Burke. Schanz will oversee Comcast's engineering and network operations and technology strategy to facilitate the deployment of new communications products and services.

"John's 20 years of technical and operational experience will be a tremendous asset as we further deploy integrated video, high-speed Internet, voice and wireless services to consumers," said Burke. "I look forward to working with John to leverage our unparalleled platform in support of our deployment of new products."

Schanz was executive vice president of network and data center operations for America Online, with responsibility for architecture, planning, design and operation of AOL's global network infrastructure.
