) -- The assertion of
Coca-Cola Great Britain's
Vitamin Water ad that the drink is "nutritious" is misleading, says a British advertising watchdog.
The Vitamin Water ad in question is a poster with the words: "enhanced hydration for the nation delicious and nutritious."
The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) -- a self-regulating U.K. advertising group -- said the ad incorrectly conveyed to British consumers that all the added ingredients in Vitamin Water were beneficial for their health.
"We considered that consumers would understand the word 'nutritious' in the context of the ad as a claim that Vitaminwater contained added ingredients that were needed by the body in order to stay healthy," the ASA said in a statement.
"However, we considered that they would not expect a "nutritious" drink to have the equivalent of four or five teaspoons of added sugar."
The watchdog said the ad should not appear again in its current form.
The Coca-Cola Company said it's disappointed by the ruling, but doesn't expect to face further action as long as the ad doesn't run again, according to the
Shares of The Coca-Cola Company are flat at $63.43, while rival
is down 0.9% to $65.97.
