NEW YORK (

MainStreet

) -- An infographic from Mint.com illustrates which major cities are likely to spend the most on gym memberships as we enter the new year.

According to the graphic, residents of Savannah, Ga., spend the most at gyms, with the average monthly spending totaling $144.35 per person (or $1,732.20 a year). Conversely, residents of Pomona, Calif., spend the least, averaging only $47.35 a month (or $568.20 a year).

The stats were aggregated from the budgeting Web site's database, which contains information on more than 5 million users. They are based on the average monthly spending of users from December 2010 to November.

Other cities shelling out big bucks for gym memberships include Naples, Fla.; New York City; Sarasota, Fla.; and Astoria, N.Y.

The data illustrate that while the percentage of Mint users spending at gyms does spike in February, activity remains fairly level throughout the year, ranging between 14.1% and 15.9% of users a year.

Of course, this doesn't mean the same number of people are hitting the gym all year round, since it's all too easy to buy a membership you never use.
