, a global provider of transportation services and logistics, said its third-quarter earnings rose 30.1% from the year-ago period, helped by improved gross profit across all segments.

The company earned $70.4 million, or 40 cents a share, in the quarter, compared with $54.1 million, or 31 cents a share, a year ago. Per-share data is adjusted to reflect a 2-for-1 stock split on Oct. 14, 2005. Analysts surveyed by Thomson First Call were expecting earnings of 39 cents a share in the most recent quarter.

Third-quarter revenue rose 14.8% from a year ago to $1.71 billion as against analysts' expectations of $1.76 billion.

Gross profit for the quarter rose 21.6% from a year ago to $278.3 million and gross margin increased 80 basis points to 16.2%. Operating income rose 29.8% to $111.1 million and operating margin improved by 70 basis points to 6.5%.

By segment, revenue for the transportation segment rose 14.5% to $1.4 billion. Revenue for the sourcing segment rose 19.4% to $307.4 million and for information services segments it rose 12% to $11.1 million.

Shares of the company were up $1.69, or 4%, to $44.25 in after-market activity Tuesday.
