said Monday.

To date, more than 80,000 claims have been submitted and almost 41,000 payments have been made, totaling more than $128 million, BP said in an update on its Web site.

BP said the total volume of oil recovered or flared by containment systems to date is about 435,600 barrels. The oil company said the next step in containment operations, a floating riser containment system, remains on schedule to begin at the end of June or early July.

The system is intended to provide additional oil containment capacity of about 20,000 to 25,000 barrels a day, BP said.
