British multinational oil and gas company BP (BP) - Get Report is in talks with electric car manufacturers to offer battery re-charging docks at its global network of fuel service stations, BP CEO Bob Dudley told Reuters on Tuesday.

The initiative illustrates the oil conglomerate's plans to benefit from the shift away from diesel and petrol cars, as the rapid expansion of electric vehicles threatens traditional oil companies' business models.

"We have discussions going on with a lot of the EV manufacturers to have a tie-up with our retail network for charging," Dudley said in the Reuters interview.

Dudley has been outspoken regarding the oil and gas industry's need to be more proactive in the move away from fossil fuels.

"We'll be ready for this world but we're not going to dive in too deeply," he said, pointing to BP's previously failed attempts into renewable energy, including solar power.

Shares of BP were climbing over 3% during Tuesday morning trading.
