GULF OF MEXICO (

TheStreet

) --

BP

(BP) - Get Report

said Friday it was temporarily suspending relief well activities in the Gulf of Mexico because Tropical Storm Bonnie is expected to track into the Gulf.

The work was halted after ships around the site were ordered to evacuate ahead of the storm, the

Associated Press

reports. The storm could reach the Gulf of Mexico by Saturday, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center.

BP said on its Web site the well remains "shut-in at this time." There were worries that the

cap that has mostly contained the oil

would have to be reopened and left gushing if a major storm came through,

AP

reports.

"BP will continue to monitor the MC252 well as long as weather permits. Duration of the suspension of relief well activities will be dependent on the weather," the company said.
