He succeeds Arnold M. Nemirow, who will remain as nonexecutive chairman until later this year.
Paterson, 51, was with Georgia-Pacific. He joined that paper giant in 1987 and has been its executive vice president since 2003, handling its Building Products Division.
In January, Nemirow, 63, announced his intention to retire this year pending completion of a search for his successor.
