announced U.S. regulatory approval for the NexStent carotid artery stenting system for patients at high risk for needing surgery.

The system will be used along with the company's Monorail delivery system to prop open a carotid artery after it has been cleared of plaque.

The device has a rolled sheet design allowing one stent size to adapt to multiple artery diameters, the company says.

The NexStent is manufactured by EndoTex Interventional Systems and has been distributed exclusively by Boston Scientific outside the U.S. since last year.

Boston is now planning to acquire EndoTex within 90 days.
