Bombay Stocks Plunge Anew

BOMBAY -- The Bombay stocks plunged for the fourth day in a row Thursday, dropping 4.7% amid fierce selling across the globe.

The Sensex index dropped 461 points to 9,296. The index has lost 7.7% of its value this week and is down 25% in a month.

Major losers were

Bajaj Auto

, which declined 8.4%,

Tata Power

, down 7.7%,

Tata Steel

, down 7.6%, and

ICICI Bank

Only three out of 30 index components rose, none of them more than fractionally.

Ranbaxy

shed 6.3% as it bought Terapia SA, following approvals from Romanian Competition Council.

Reliance Energy

lost 6.6% even as it plans to invest 600 billion rupees in various projects to generate total capacity of 16,000 megawatts.
