said Monday it named James Halsell as vice president and program manager of the ATK-led ARES I upper stage team, based in Huntsville, Ala.
Halsell's will lead the joint team of ATK Launch Systems Group, Lockheed Martin and Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne in pursuing the ARES I Upper Stage procurement, planned for early 2007.
Back in June, NASA revealed the names of the next generation of launch vehicles that will return humans to the moon and later take them to Mars and other destinations. The crew launch vehicle will be called Ares I, and the cargo launch vehicle will be known as Ares V.
Halsell was formerly a NASA astronaut and space shuttle program launch integration manager, the Edina, Minn.-based company said.
The shares of the company were trading up $1.70, or 2.21%, at $78.78 Monday.
