With the recent success of the device it could be ready for a makeover.
In its fourth-quarter, Apple posted 14% revenue growth to roughly $4.8 billion. Part of what has been fueling that growth is 11% unit growth in its iPad business spurred by robust demand for the 10.5-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro models that the company launched in June.
The iPad has also benefited from the introduction the iOS 11 software which brought some PC-like multitasking features to the device. The recent software enhancements fortify Apple's goal to sell iPad Pro as a notebook alternative.
And, the device has been gaining traction in China, as Apple noted a boost in sales of the iPad throughout the region last quarter.
Now it appears Apple is getting even more serious about the future of the iPad. A Bloomberg report on Wednesday says that the tech titan will launch a redesigned, high-end iPad as early as 2018 that combines key iPhone X innovations including thinner edges and facial recognition.
"At least one new iPad model with a screen size similar to the 10.5-inch iPad Pro is planned to include Face ID for unlocking the device, making payments, and sending animated emojis," the report said. "The feature would replace the iPad home button that has come with a fingerprint scanner since 2014, one of the people said. The updated tablet is expected to be released later next year, a little more than a year after the last major iPad Pro upgrade"
