The International Data Corporation's (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker on Tuesday projected that global smartphone shipments would maintain positive growth through 2021.
The IDC foresees worldwide smartphone shipments to rise to just over 1.7 billion in 2021 from 1.47 billion in 2016.
One of the biggest winners from the boost in shipments will be Apple (AAPL) - Get Report , as the tech titan is expected to see a 1.5% year-over-year growth in iPhone shipments, compared to the 7% decline it had in 2016.
The IDC also anticipates that the iPhone 8 will be the catalyst for a supercycle in smartphone upgrades starting in 2018.
The firm expects 9.1% shipment growth in 2018 from the iPhone 8 and the new 7S and 7S+ models helping Apple achieve near double-digit growth next year.
