Ann Taylor's April Sales Up

Easter traffic helps boost receipts at Ann Taylor and Ann Taylor LOFT stores.

said Thursday that same-store sales, or sales in stores open at least a year, increased 10.9% in April.

Same-store sales in April of last year were down 3%.

Total net sales for the four weeks ended April 29 were $213.6 million, up from $174.3 million in April 2005.

Net sales for Ann Taylor increased 7.7% to $83.6 million and for Ann Taylor LOFT by 32.3% to $106.9 million.

Comparable-store sales for April 2006 were up 7.6% for Ann Taylor compared with 1.8% decline last year, and up 13.4% for Ann Taylor LOFT compared with 4.8 % decline last year.

Comparable-store sales for the combined March-April period increased 5.6%.

"I am thrilled with the performance of both Ann Taylor and LOFT during April," said Kay Krill, president and CEO of Ann Taylor. "Our product assortment at both divisions was brand appropriate and trend-right, generating strong client response across the country. We are also viewed as a wardrobing destination for special holidays, and the Easter shift enhanced April sales in both brands."

The company's shares closed Thursday down $1.98 at $37.26.
