said same-store U.S. sales for January rose 5.9% from the same period a year ago, but total sales for the month went through the roof.

The casual apparel retailer, which is based in Warrendale, Pa., said total sales for the five weeks ended Feb. 3 rose 73.1% to $72.3 million from $41.8 million for the four-week period ended Jan. 29, 2000. Total sales in the latest month include $6.4 million from the

American Eagle's U.S. sales for the five-week period rose 57.6%. Total sales for the fourth quarter increased 48.6% to $424.2 million from $285.4 million in the year-ago period, which had one less week. Same-store sales for the fourth quarter rose 11.3% compared with the same period last year.
