The company announced Monday, Nov. 13, that it has acquired multi-season global television rights to produce a series based on J.R.R. Tolkien's smash hit fantasy novel series "The Lord of the Rings."

Amazon will work with the Tolkien Estate and Trust, News Corp.'s (NWSA) - Get News Corporation Class A Report HarperCollins and Time Warner Inc.'s (TWX) New Line Cinema to create the upcoming series. It will be a prequel to Tolkien's "The Fellowship of the Ring," which is the first in the series.

Amazon's rendition will offer its own unique story lines and has room for spinoffs down the road, Amazon said. The series will be an Amazon Prime Original available for Prime members to stream using Amazon's Prime Video app for television and mobile and connected devices.

"The Lord of the Rings" novels were named Amazon customers' favorite book of the millennium in 1999, Amazon said in a statement. The series was also Britain's best-loved novel of all time in the BBC's The Big Read in 2003.

Amazon stock gained 1.23% to $1,139.16 in late-afternoon trading Monday.
