At 29 malls in 15 states including in New Jersey, California and Texas, Amazon has opened "temporary" pop-up kiosks that sell Amazon gadgets such as the Echo, Fire TV, Fire tablets and Kindle, a company spokeswoman said.
As TheStreet observed at Amazon's kiosk in the Freehold Raceway Mall in Freehold, N.J., which opened within the last month (pictured below), customers can test out products, as they would in a full Apple (AAPL) - Get Apple Inc. (AAPL) Report store, and then order them online. Two Amazon experts were on duty in the New Jersey mall to assist customers.
The Amazon spokeswoman declined to comment further.
These kiosks are popping up across the country at a particularly troublesome time for retail.
The New York Timesreported that Amazon is considering opening up furniture and appliances stores, which TheStreet pointed out could have a ghastly effect on retailers including Sears (SHLD) -- a company that already is concerned that it will be unable to continue operating in the future.
Amazon has been blamed for upending the tech industry, putting pressure on bookstores like Barnes & Noble (BKS) - Get Barnes & Noble, Inc. Report by opening up its own stores, and also striking fear in the hearts of Kroger (KR) - Get Kroger Co. (KR) Report and Whole Foods (WFM) with a new tech-friendly grocery store format.
Plus, Amazon recently released several new private-label apparel brands including Ella Moon, its line of women's bohemian-style casual clothes available only to Prime members, on its website, further pressuring bricks-and-mortar mall-based retailers.
Several retailers negatively impacted by e-commerce - 16 to be exact - have been forced to shutter massive amounts of stores this year. And more still have succumbed to bankruptcy, including everyday value price department store operator Gordmans Stores (GMAN) - Get Goldman Sachs Motif Manufacturing Revolution ETF Report and sporting goods retailer Gander Mountain.
