Just days after Apple (AAPL) announced that its new iPhone X will implement Face ID to process payments, the Alibaba (BABA) -owned financial services company Ant Financial is letting customers unlock and pick up packages at smart couriers in Shanghai using facial recognition, China Money Network reports.
The move represents the Ant Financial's efforts to promote the use of technology when executing various transactions. The move also follows the company's launch of a facial scan payment system that is present in some of Yum Brands' (YUM) KFC restaurants in China.
The new facial recognition technology will initially start with five pilot smart couriers in Shanghai. Ant Financial hopes to expand the technology to 10,000 couriers in the next three years.
Shares of Alibaba were climbing higher in late morning trading on Friday.
